The Meaning of the Season

We are too busy cultivating our outward thankfulness to realize what we are actually doing. In snapping selfies during the holiday season, our narcissism spills over in edited images of ourselves: 'Here's me being thankful!' or, 'Here's me with the 24lb turkey I cooked!' and again, 'Here's me with my family!'

Remember why we are celebrating, why do we want to be with these people? What joy can we bring, what can we learn?

“Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and give thanks continuously... Because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

Interesting to see where Westin started, darker than current but started off strong. I love the amount of story that can fit into 140 characters. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ask for one suggestion each week on how you could be a better husband.

What is one thing you need help with this week?

What is one thing I can do for you this week?

Great Courses The Prince

Professor Landon does an excellent job at providing context on when, why and to who The Prince was written.

2018 Goal Questions

Why are these things important? What is the reason for doing them? What value will they bring to our lives?

Entertaining

To be able to share what we have with others and to bring joy into other's lives by using the gifts and talents we have been given. Also to not feel so lonely.

Inside House Minimalised

To provide space for life to happen.

To provide more time to enjoy each other's company, to do the things we love and for Brandon to discover the world around him.

Wednesday 10

It was a really nice time with Benita tonight. She looked fantastic and it was good to have the chance to talk together especially about non child related things. If we can keep this up at least one a week we will have a much stronger relationship.

A nice addition to the series. Meyers is good at throwing the characters into new situations to stop the series becoming stale. The charachters are a bit 2 dimensional but there is just enough depth and growth to keep the story moving.

Honouring Through Listening

Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12:10

When we drop everything, look at our spouse, and listen, we communicate, “You are the most important person in my life.”

Friday 26

Australia Day Fireworks

Caught the train from Loganlea to Southbank. Not as many people there as I would have thought, we ended up getting a seat on the river wall right across from one of the barges. It was really nice to get to sit with Brandon and he had a huge smile on his face when the fireworks started. He loved the noisy fireworks. It was a nice to relax after a not so great week. Brandon managed to stay awake for the train trip back home and he amused a girl waiting with us when he was asking if we where earthlings and if there are any people that aren't earthlings.

Saturday 27

Sunday 28

I didn't get much chance to rest because I had to look after Brandon and Bradley, very tired and cranky all day except for the show.

Brain Candy

Went through a number of scientific explanations for common every day things that are easy to miss. What is in the air? What is actually visible in steam and stage smoke? Interesting properties of air flow, non obvious effects of gravity. Like a 3hr episode of Vsauce, Adam and Michael are both amazing speakers.

Not great, weigh more than the start of the year, haven't played any more games, Brandon's toys are still a mess, no visitors, but I am still optermistic for the year as we have all been sick and we had a couple of weeks of very hot weather so I will be back on track this month.

Daughters of Rome

Moved very quickly through the year of the 4 emperors and felt a little contrived in place with some very unlikable characters but it is a good read and there is always a fun little interlude around the corner.

Manon Lescaut

A strange tale, a love story where there is not much evidence of why they love each other? I can see why it was shocking for its time but divorced from it's time it is just a tale of annoying kids in young love do terrible things. Short but still manages to outstay its welcome and finishes rather abruptly.

We parked on the road as it we left home fairly late and it didn't look like there was going to be any parks available so we had an extra 800? m walk. We scrambled down the rocks to find a good place to setup. Brandon loved the water and it wasn't to cold. I wish I had brought my togs so that we could have swam a bit more but Brandon still had fun playing in the water. He made it most of the way back to the car park without complaining but struggled to walk back along the road to where we parked the car but made it in the end. We had lunch on gallery walk and picked up some wine and chocolate before heading home.

A very uneven movie. As a culmination of 10 years of Marvel movies it is almost perfect. Everyone fits together, the villian has depth, old movies aren't re explained and the movie has a compelling story arc. But the tone is very uneven, on screen carnage followed immediately by comedy robbed the story of some of its depth, and the deaths at the end are meaningless knowing that there is a second moving coming and upcoming movies announced.

Mere Christianity

In plain language the question should never be: 'Do I like that kind of service?' but 'Are these doctrines true: Is holiness here? Does my conscience move me towards this?'...

Be kind to those who have chosen different doors and to those still in the hall. If they are wrong they need your prayers all the more; and of they are your enemies, then you are under orders to pray for them. P XVI

Tuesday 21

Mere Christianity

We are told that Christ was killed for us, that his death has washed out our sins, and that by dying He has disabled death itself. That is Christianity. That is what has to be believed. Pg 55

Wednesday 22

But the Christian thinks any good he does comes from the Christ-life inside him. He does not think Good will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us. Pg 63

Human beings judge one another based by their external actions. God judges then by their moral choices.
...
Some of us who seem quite nice people may, in fact, have made so little use of a good hereditary and a good upbringing that we are really worse than those whom we regard as fiends. Pg 91

... I want to make it as clear as I possibly can that the centre of Christian morality is not here. If anyone thinks they Christians regard unchastity as the supreme vice, he is quite wrong. The sins of the flesh are bad, but they are the least bad of all sins. Pg 102

Thursday 23

Friday 24

Mere Christianity

Consequently, if you do not listen to theology, that will not mean that you have no Ideas about God. It will mean that you have a lot of wrong ones - bad, muddled, out of date ideas. For a great many of the ideas about God which are trotted out as novelties today are simply the ones which real Theologians tried centuries ago and rejected. Pg 155

It is a 'Christian idea' in the sense that great and wise Christians have held it and there is nothing in it contrary to Christianity. But it is not in the Bible or any of the creeds. You can be a perfectly good Christian without accepting it, or indeed without thinking of the matter at all. Pg 171

Spousal Pain

Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. – Luke 6:28

Repeatedly, the Bible counsels us not to avoid conflict, but to meet it head on. In doing so, we send a message to our spouse that we will continue to love and pursue a relationship with them, regardless of what’s going on in their life, that we accept them for who they are, and want nothing but the best for them.

When a spouse snaps at you because they’re frustrated, instead of retaliating or walking away, step in and give them a hug. Ask them what’s going on.

Spousal Leadership

I’ve been told that the Hebrew word used for “tend and keep” comes with the imagery of a fence around something valuable. We weren’t created as gardeners, but as guardians.

Yes, Eve was deceived and ate the apple, but Adam knew better. He wasn’t deceived. He made a choice of “happy wife, happy life”.

We don’t want people holding us accountable, and we dson’t want to hold other people accountable.

An excellent study on what it means that Jesus didn't just die bit was crucified and why that was crucial to the message he brought to earth. The book is a very difficult to read being dense with jargon and wandering side tangents.

The Crucified God Notes

All blasphemy against God was punishable by death and Jesus claimed to be God so he had to die.

By being crucified Jesus died in the most painful, humiliating, shameful, alone way possible at the time.

Amalekites

Moses leading the Israelites from Egypt to the promised land. Attacked on the way.

Exodus 17:14-16 NLT After the victory, the LORD instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” [15] Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means "the LORD is my banner"). [16] He said, “They have raised their fist against the LORD ’s throne, so now c the LORD will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.”

Deuteronomy 25:17-19 NLT “Never forget what the Amalekites did to you as you came from Egypt. [18] They attacked you when you were exhausted and weary, and they struck down those who were straggling behind. They had no fear of God. [19] Therefore, when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your enemies in the land he is giving you as a special possession, you must destroy the Amalekites and erase their memory from under heaven. Never forget this!

1 Samuel 15:2-3 NLT This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I have decided to settle accounts with the nation of Amalek for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt. [3] Now go and completely destroy a the entire Amalekite nation — men, women, children, babies, cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys.”

Saul keeps the best as a sacrifice but God is not pleased.

1 Samuel 15:22-23 NLT But Samuel replied, “What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and submission is better than offering the fat of rams. [23] Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.”

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

What is it like to fall through the cracks of society? To have no family, no friends, go to work, go home repeat. What does it look like to deal with a traumatic childhood event while falling through the cracks of society?

An intimate book without a wasted word in telling Eleanor's journey of discovery. Excellent.

Journey to the Centre of the World

There is a lot to get past in this book, the hysterical narator/nephew, all knowing uncle, mute, resourceful guide, the lack of character progression, the lists of flora, fuana & minerals, and diversions to show of at the time cutting edge science. But for all that it moves fast and always wanting to know what happens next. Ruined only by the lack of a compelling conclusion.

Hi

We are concerned that for the third time this year Brandon has come home injured without us being informed. This includes an extremely serious bite and swelling and scratches around his eye.

It is very frustrating to not be able to talk to Brandon about what is happening when we are not being told the circumstances around these injuries.

We are also concerned about Brandon's behavior at Kindy and his struggles to make friends. A few steps have been made towards helping him in this since the middle of the year progress report, but we feel not enough is being done. We where only just informed on Monday that he has been hitting his friend Mackenzie. Benita was told it has been happening for awhile, and yet this was the first time we had heard about it. Not only that, but Benita was only told about it because she approached the staff member about him being hurt by another child in a completely unrelated incident and the response she got was that he's been hitting Mackenzie when he gets upset that she's playing with other children and won't play with him. When Benita tried to enquire further about why it might be happening, so that we can talk to him about it and find a possible solution, we where unable to get any helpful feedback and was just told he's just lashing out and that we should talk to him and that Mackenzie should be able to play with other children. Which we do understand, but if he's lashing out because he feels lost and has no other friends, it would be helpful if he can be guided towards other friendships.

Can you please explain what you will be doing to

  1. Increase the safety of Brandon while he is in your care
  2. Ensure that we are being informed of all incidents involving Brandon
  3. Help Brandon integrate into his class

I am happy to have a meeting about it if that is necessary.

Goodstart Complaint

I am deeply concerned about the conduct of the staff at Goodstart My Warren Park as on multiple occasions my.child had come home injured with no communication on that it happened or incident report. This includes facial injuries and a bite causing significant bruising. When this has been raised with the teachers and director our concerns have been dismissed.
